Visitors to Organ Pipe Cactus National Monument should be aware of potential risks associated with being in a remote area along an international boundary. The desert backcountry of the park is known for being a popular border section for illegal crossing attempts. Most of the people trying to get into the country this way are not well equipped for traversing the desert, and request support from park visitors. The National Park Service recommends that visitors refrain from picking up hitch hikers and "use good judgment in providing water, and provide nothing else." Occasionally these immigrants pose a threat to legal park visitors, some merely out of desperation. At certain times, areas of the park's remote backcountry are closed for security concerns.
